Beeminder tiny habits9/27/2023 ![]() The goals I’m tracking that do have manual input take less than a few minutes to fill out each day. Thankfully, Beeminder is well aware of this and has many ways to automate data collection, like with integrations with other apps and devices. If data collection becomes a chore, then you’ll start viewing doing something new as a chore as well. Not to get too meta on you, but the routine of tracking our habits is a habit itself.īecause of this, it’s easy to fail every goal if this new routine itself is difficult. Minding things that are a chore to collect data for. Making your commitments serious will allow you to take them seriously. Think deeply about what would help your community, your company, or your future self. Having well-defined principles can give you the discipline to carry out difficult tasks, even if there’s a lack of motivation. Will help move you from busybee work to doing things that are more important. What do you value strongly that would give a goal meaning? What are the benefits to achieving your goal?ĭoes the outcome make all the work worth it? There’s a very good chance you will continue to hate doing the thing, and now you also hate tracking it, and Beeminder by proxy, for making you do the thing.ĭon’t dive head-first into a goal without first asking yourself why. ![]() In that case creating a goal that forces you to run regularly is going to set you up for an antagonistic relationship with Beeminder. While these insights are about Beeminder, the principles can be helpful when dealing with any sort of goal accountability. So I looked for the common elements of my failures, and documented them. I realized that it’s as important to track your mistakes as it is to track your goals. These caused me to derail more times than I’d like to admit. I’ll start with the major slip-ups I found myself making when I first started beeminding. Specifically, how to ensure you set up the right goals from the start, as well as avoid fizzling out. Now I want to go deeper into the weeds and share more insights on how to use Beeminder. I also shared my personal systems and how I keep all of my plates spinning at once. I talked about Beeminder’s unique way of thinking about goal-setting and self-accountability. He switched his major to music at the urging of the head of zoology at the time, Dr. Planning to work with his father on their ranch, Brubeck entered the liberal arts college College of the Pacific in Stockton, California, in 1938 to study veterinary science. He could not read music during these early lessons, attributing the difficulty to poor eyesight, but "faked" his way through well enough that his deficiency went mostly unnoticed. Brubeck did, however, take lessons from his mother. īrubeck did not intend to become a musician, although his two older brothers, Henry and Howard, were already on that track. ![]() His father, Peter Howard "Pete" Brubeck, was a cattle rancher, while his mother, Elizabeth (née Ivey), who had studied piano in England under Myra Hess and intended to become a concert pianist, taught piano for extra money. He was born on December 6, 1920, in Concord, California, and grew up in Ione, California. Ancestry and early life īrubeck had Swiss ancestry (the family surname was originally Brodbeck), while his maternal grandparents were English and German. Noted as "one of Jazz's first pop stars" by the Los Angeles Times, Brubeck rejected his fame, and felt uncomfortable with Time magazine featuring him on the cover before Duke Ellington. Brubeck's 1959 album Time Out was added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in 2005. In 2008, Brubeck was inducted into the California Hall of Fame, and a year later, he was given an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music. In 1996, Brubeck received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. John Fordham of The Guardian commented: "Brubeck's real achievement was to blend European compositional ideas, very demanding rhythmic structures, jazz song-forms and improvisation in expressive and accessible ways." īrubeck was the recipient of several music awards and honors throughout his lifetime. Brubeck's fusion of classical music and jazz would come to be known as " third stream", although Brubeck's use of third stream would predate the coining of the term. Like many of his contemporaries, Brubeck played into the style of the French composer Darius Milhaud, especially his earlier works, including "Serenade Suite" and "Playland-At-The-Beach". Brubeck, with Desmond, used elements of West Coast jazz near the height of its popularity, combining them with the unorthodox time signatures seen in Time Out. He expressed elements of atonality and fugue. Brubeck continued releasing music until his death in 2012.īrubeck's style ranged from refined to bombastic, reflecting both his mother's classical training and his own improvisational skills. The quartet followed up Time Out with four other albums in non-standard time signatures, and some of the other songs from this series became hits as well, including " Blue Rondo à la Turk" (in 9Ĥ). The lead single from the album, " Take Five", a tune written by Desmond in 5Ĥ time, similarly became the highest-selling jazz single of all time. Despite its esoteric theme and contrarian time signatures, Time Out became Brubeck's highest-selling album, and the first jazz album to sell over one million copies. 1.5 volt battery9/27/2023 ![]() ![]() I don't mean to insult your intelligence, and if you know your stuff and are certain about what happened, please forgive me. But I have to say that something seems amiss here. Obviously I haven't personally examined your home climate control system, so I'd be a fool to spout off and tell you there's been a mistake. This is not a totally foolproof way to check cells, and you are certainly right to advise folks to be thoughtful and prudent about where they put their faith. Instructions on how to use a multimeter are out of scope of this Instructable, you can find some information here: I will attach some pictures of measurements in action. Try to use batteries that have same amount of energy stored in them.Īnother tip: I sort my batteries according to Voltages, 1.35+ Good, 1.2V-1.3V Ok (but almost out), 1V-1.2V Discard. Tip : do not use old and new batteries in the same device at the same time. Otherwise, properly discard of the battery. If the reading is more than 1.3V for alkaline battery (not rechargeable battery) then the battery still has some juice left in it, don't throw it away. Notice the voltage reading on the voltmeter. With the battery in front of you, put the red probe to battery's nipple (+) and the black probe to the battery's flat side (-). To test the battery, turn on your voltmeter, put the voltmeter on DCV and make sure that it is far above the battery voltage, on most voltmeters there is a setting "20" in the DCV area, so switch your voltmeter to that setting. ![]() The proper voltage for AA/AAA NiCd/NiMh rechargeable battery is 1.25 Volts The proper voltage for AA/AAA alkaline battery is 1.5V This electronics tip has to deal with checking common alkaline AA/AAA batteries or AA/AAA rechargeable batteries for proper voltage with a voltmeter.ĭisclaimer : some people might say that a battery should always be tested under load but I have found that in most common household applications this is insignificant and will not change the results of the testing too much. If we don't know how to check a battery we might throw out a perfectly fine battery (especially when we have a pile of them somewhere in the drawer). We all run into a situation when batteries in our remotes, toys, keyboards/mice run out.

Chimpanzee meme9/27/2023 Most of the time they attack through cage bars. He is affiliated with the Living Links Center at Emory University in Atlanta where he is a professor of psychology, and is also author of The New York Times notable book of the year, Our Inner Ape.Īre captive chimpanzee attacks on humans common? To find out more about chimpanzee attacks, we spoke with Frans de Waal, lead biologist from the Yerkes National Primate Research Center. Travis’ owner claims to have given him a Xanax-laced tea the day of the attack. Some have suggested that the attack was spurred by Xanax, a prescription drug used to treat anxiety disorders in humans, with side effects that can-but rarely-include depression, confusion and problem behavior. So why would an allegedly acclimated chimpanzee turn on a human-especially one whom he had known? Travis was reportedly suffering from Lyme disease, caused by a tick-borne bacterium and known to cause fatigue, joint problems and mental difficulties-including trouble focusing and poor memory in humans. But periodic violent attacks on humans, including one in Havilah, Calif., in 2005 in which a man was maimed by two chimps at an animal sanctuary, are reminders that the animals have at least one big difference: brute strength. Reports, however, are starting to surface that Travis might have bitten another woman in 1996 and that Herold had been warned by animal control that her pet could be dangerous.Ĭhimpanzees, with a genetic profile that's 98 percent like ours, can seem like cute, hairy iterations of people. He appeared in television commercials and had a sapiens-level CV that included using a computer, bathing and sipping wine from a stemmed glass, according to The New York Times. The chimp, Travis, who was shot and killed by police officers at the scene, was apparently a friendly fixture around the neighborhood. The victim remains in critical condition. The owner, Sandra Herold, who tried to stop the attack, was also injured and briefly hospitalized. Some people noted that animals frequently display greater loyalty and affection than people, emphasising the need for more compassion and respect for all living things.Earlier this week, a 14-year-old, 200-pound (90-kilogram) pet chimpanzee in Stamford, Conn., left a woman in critical condition after attacking her-mutilating her face and hands. Many online users were moved by the chimpanzee’s gesture. It received more than 6.5 lakh likes and more than 7,000 comments. ![]() The video, which was posted on JC Pieri’s Instagram account, immediately gained popularity. Viewers were emotionally moved by the moment because it perfectly illustrates the simple bond between a man and an animal. The chimpanzee repeatedly dips its hands into the water and then pours water over Pieri’s palms as if thanking him for the small courtesy. Then, it cleans his hands by rubbing them together as if trying to convey that his hands got dirty due to drinking water. The chimpanzee takes water from the puddle and pours it onto Pieri’s hands. It begins to clean Pieri’s hands using the water. After drinking water three times, the chimpanzee does something that will melt your heart. ![]() It asks for assistance as JC Pieri walks past and approaches the chimpanzee without concern, and it will be hard to believe, but in the video, you can see that the chimpanzee uses both of the photographer’s hands to scoop out water from the puddle and starts drinking. A post shared by JC Pieri chimpanzee appears to be thirsty as it sits close to a water pit at the beginning of the video.
